What is Polyester?
Polyester is a synthetic fiber made from petroleum-based polymers. It was developed in the 1940s and has become the most widely used fiber in the world.
‘Now — here’s what most people don’t tell you: There’s a massive difference between cheap polyester and premium polyester.’
Cheap Polyester | Premium Polyester
Rough, plasticky hand-feel | Smooth, refined finish
Traps heat, no breathability | Micro-filament weave allows air flow
Fades, pills, stretches out | Colorfast, shape-retaining, durable
Mass-produced, generic | Precision-engineered, luxury-grade
+-R150 garment | +-R1,500+ garment
‘What you’re holding is premium-grade polyester. It’s been engineered for performance, durability, and a refined finish.’
Why Choose Polyester?
The Benefit | What It Means for You
Wrinkle Resistance | Looks crisp after hours of wear — perfect for travel or long days |
Color Retention | Won’t fade after repeated washing — stays vibrant longer |
Shape Stability | No stretching out or bagging — maintains its silhouette |
Easy Care | Machine washable, quick-dry, minimal to no ironing needed |
Durability | Resists abrasion, pilling, and wear — lasts for years |
Affordability | More accessible price point while maintaining quality |
“Let me be transparent about what polyester is not:”
Limitation | Honest Explanation
Breathability | Not as cool as linen or cotton — best for moderate climates or air-conditioned settings |
Natural Feel | It’s synthetic — won’t have the organic texture of natural fibers |
Environmental Impact | Petroleum-based — not biodegradable like plant fibers |
Heat Sensitivity | Can melt under extreme heat — avoid high-temperature ironing |
“If breathability is your priority, I’d recommend our Linen or Cotton collections instead. I’d rather you buy what suits your needs than sell you something that disappoints.”
Will Polyester Satin Shrink and Bleed Colour?
– Shrinkage: Minimal to none (0-3%) — one of polyester’s greatest advantages. Synthetic polymer fibers do not absorb water like natural fibers. They are heat-set during manufacturing, locking the shape in place.
– Colour Bleeding: Rare — polyester is colorfast when dyed correctly, but cheap polyester can bleed.no bleeding. Our dyes bond at high temperature during manufacturing, locking colour into the fiber permanently.
‘At non-european® we use premium-grade polyester satin with disperse dye technology. This means the colour is locked into the fiber at a molecular level — it won’t fade, bleed, or transfer under normal care conditions.’
However — heat is the enemy:
Risk Factor | Impact
Hot Water Wash (40°C+) | Low-Moderate risk — can cause slight contraction
Tumble Drying (High Heat) | Moderate risk — can warp or shrink fibers
High Heat Ironing | High risk — can melt, scorch, or permanently warp the satin finish
Dry Cleaning | No risk — safest option for zero shrinkage
Do | Don’t
✅ Wash cold or warm (30-40°C) | ❌ No hot water — can warp fibers
✅ Mild detergent | ❌ No bleach — can strip colour
Result: With proper care, polyester satin will retain its size indefinitely. This is one of its biggest selling points.
Why would I pay more for a 100% Polyester Satin garment?
You might wonder: ‘If polyester is synthetic, why pay more?’ Here’s why:
- The Weave Quality
Premium polyester uses micro-filament fibers — thinner than human hair. This creates a smoother, more luxurious hand-feel. Cheap polyester uses thick, coarse fibers. - The Construction
This garment is handcrafted in Cape Town by skilled artisans. The majority of what you’re paying for is labor, design, and craftsmanship — not the raw fiber. - The Design IP
You’re buying an original non-european® design — not a mass-produced copy. The pattern, fit, and finish are exclusive to our brand. - The Longevity
A R300 polyester top from fast fashion will look worn in 3 months. This is engineered to look as good in Year 5 as it does today. Cost per wear makes this the smarter investment. - The Ethics
You’re supporting South African artisans — fair wages, safe conditions, dignified work. Cheap polyester funds overseas sweatshops.
“Here’s the truth: Fiber is only part of the equation. The other parts are craftsmanship, design, and fit. This garment is handcrafted in Cape Town by people who take pride in their work. The polyester is premium-grade, engineered for performance. And the design is exclusively non-european®. If you want effortless elegance that travels well, looks sharp after 10 hours, and never needs ironing — this is your piece. If you want natural breathability for hot days, let me show you our Linen collection instead. Which matters more to you: natural fiber or effortless maintenance?”
